sometimes being chivalrous can feel stupid and cringe, and that’s ok.

story time!

I was at the gym the other day finishing up a work. I was using a 40lb med ball, doing a few core things. simultaneously, a woman is finishing up her workout. with her was 25lb plate, water bottle, and bcakpack.

we both start walking towards the door at the same time. As a man, it’s my duty to open the door for her, but I realized that she was going to make it to the door first. I had to do it. I had to speedwalk.

I’ve never been more embarrassed this week than in that moment. as the day went by though, I started to think “look, what would be worse: being the type of guy to speedwalk so he can open the door for a woman with her hands full, or being the type of guy who waits for her to open the door just because she got there first?”

there is a clear and obvious answer here.

all this to say, sometimes there isn’t a cool, hot way to do The Good Thing. but Good Things must be done! alas, life comes with unavoidable cringe.

if you’re always worried about what you look like to The Social Eye, you’re going to live not a fun life, to put it simply. things will not be as good for you as they could be.

sometimes you have to be cringe, and that ok.
